5! Common interview questions and how to answer them effectively

So that you can understand the ‘why’ behind those questions and mold your answers to specifically meet the interviewer’s requirements. So, are you ready to beat your competition by hacking the psyche behind the most common interview questions and delivering answers that win you a job? Let’s get right into it!

The classic “Tell me something about yourself?”

This is the question that is a staple of almost every interview. The interviewer’s real intention behind asking this question is how enthusiastic the candidate is about his/her personal life, goals, ambitions, and a little bit of their personal life. So, despite boring them with your hobbies (unless they are related to the job you’re applying for), you should cover how you acknowledge your skills and strengths. Exhibit a positive approach and a hunger for growth. This is the best time to flaunt your conversational skills as well.

What are your strengths?”

Unlike most of your peers, you should aim to be descriptive about your answers rather than sticking to one-word answers. Rather than saying “My strength is XYZ” explain why you feel this way. Mention instances or incidents when you demonstrated this skill. Tell them how this skill positively impacted others or yourself. And finally, explain how you try to incorporate this particular skill to boost your productivity while working/ How can this skill prove to be an asset for the company. Try to cover as many positive traits as possible in this manner.

What are your Weaknesses?”

Now that the interviewer is aware of your strengths, he will aim to check how aware the candidate is about his/her weakness(es). The goal is not to just inquire but also to investigate if the candidate approaches these traits with a positive mindset. Avoid one-word answers as far as possible. You need to show that not only are you aware of the traits pulling you back, but you are also actively taking steps to eradicate these tendencies on an everyday basis.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?”

One major mistake made by a majority of candidates is that without having an actual long-term vision, they try to answer this question by quoting enormous unrealistic dreams. What you need to understand is that the interviewer expects you to share the actual long-term vision that you have for yourself which is reasonably challenging, just enough to push you to continue towards your growth. So, you can answer this question “I see myself working in a better position in the company. I also expect to gain a good amount of experience and use it to refine our products and work culture….”   Later you can include your financial and personal goals to make your answer seem more legitimate.

Why would you like to join our Company?”

This question is one question that the interviewer throws at the candidates to check if the candidate is legitimately serious about this position or not. A serious candidate is expected to thoroughly research the organization that he/she will be aiming to work for and be familiar with the achievements, work culture, and products/services of the organization. Therefore, to tackle this question make sure you study and research the company thoroughly before you walk in for the interview. This assures the interviewer that you are committed to the position that you are applying for and have more chances to prove to be an asset to the organization rather than a liability.

So, these were the 5 most common interview questions that you can expect to face in your first interview. We hope that besides the answers, it provided an insight into the interviewer’s psyche to enable you to understand the depth and expectations of the organization.
