Introduction to AWS and how it is changing the IT industry

An introduction of Amazon’s AWS:

Back in the day, launching your products/websites on the internet to make them accessible to the global audience wasn’t a piece of cake. On the contrary, it was quite a hassle since establishing your presence online meant that the first thing you had to ensure was to invest some capital and buy servers on which you were supposed to upload your web application/website. Now, these servers had limited user handling capabilities which meant that if at any particular moment, users try to access your website in bulk, your servers might respond poorly to such a large number of requests that they were not prepared for. Another major drawback of this method was that the maintenance of these servers demanded a lot of capital as well as attention.

Amazon revolutionized the Cloud-Services based industry by introducing AWS(Amazon Web Services). AWS offered cloud services to businesses on a pay-as-you-go basis which meant that now they did not have to worry about buying or maintaining servers for their websites or products and they can use Amazon’s servers instead. This simplified the online marketplace significantly because now you don’t have to worry about purchasing, maintaining, or updating servers and now Amazon’s AWS owns around 70% of the cloud computing industry.

Services Offered by AWS

Amazon has categorized it’s AWS services into 4 main categories based on user’s requirements and project specifications. These services are:

  1. Infrastructure as a Service(IaaS): IaaS are AWS’s services via which the users can rent the facilities like Networking, Storing, and Servers on a pay-as-you-go basis. This means that Amazon rents out its hardware to other users saving them the cost of purchasing all such hardwares exclusively for their organization. These platforms are often characterized with high scalability and flexibility, muti-user access and cost effectiveness.
  2. Platform as a Service(PaaS): PaaS services include all the services of Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) but it has some additional services like RDBMS (Relational DataBase Management System), OS (Operating Systems), Middle-wares, etc. Since these services emphasize on providing entire development platforms to users over cloud, they can be used by developers to design and launch their Web-based applications. These services are characterized by scalability, virtualized-technology built, easy administration and multi-user accessibility.
  3. Software as a Service (SaaS): SaaS services grant users and businesses to launch their products(softwares) over Amazon’s AWS based cloud infrastructures that emphasizes on a low-friction, service centric approach. These services can be availed by users by direct Internet connection without the need to install any applications on their systems. These services are characterized by Server-based reliability, availability over internet, scalability etc.

Impact of AWS on the IT industry

As discussed above, AWS has significantly impacted the ways big enterprises and businesses have scaled their products. They have provided an escape route from the tedious process of manually purchasing and maintaining exclusive softwares and hardwares for the business/organization. Owning a major chunk of the Cloud-Computing industry, even industry giants like Netflix and Adobe rely on services provided by Amazon’s AWS to provide their services to their customers efficiently.
